Check out this excellent summary of the climate change discussion happening in the US Congress.
As mentioned, the significant climate marches on Sunday were only necessary due to widespread ignorance. I recently found an old copy of the newsletter No Sweat News from fall 1993. Here are pages 14-17, made available for your enjoyment.
No Sweat News Fall 1993
Yes, 1993. Now it is fall 2014 in the northern hemisphere. This newsletter can legally drink in the Puritan States of America. And still, it holds relevancy. The debate has hardly progressed.
This is despite the cover story of the Summer 1995 edition titled “Climate Change, Insects, and Plague,” which elaborates on how insects can adapt rapidly to climate change, moving upslope or up-latitude when conditions allow. Even 19 years ago, it was noted that malaria-carrying mosquitoes expanded their range due to climate changes. Presently, we find ourselves amid various outbreaks, from Ebola and Chikungunya to measles and other strange cases, and most people avoid linking these to climate change, fearing it might lead to a pointless shout fest when we should come together and address these issues quickly.
This blog centers on the scandals within the energy sector. The most significant scandal of all bears no relation to Spanish con artists, Nigerian officials, or Venezuelan schemes for quick money. The true scandal is our persistent reliance on fossil fuels. We are all victims in a massive con orchestrated by the energy sector. Man-made climate change is already in motion, aligning with the patterns but surpassing the magnitude of forecasts made two decades ago. Like typical victims of a scam, we continue to deny the reality, clinging to the false promises that everything will change for the better soon, avoiding the truth of the situation. Instead of reacting with justified anger, we retreat home, having a drink while pitying ourselves. It’s a terrible way to handle things.
