The announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump declaring the total closure of Venezuelan airspace is a flagrant violation of international law and has been condemned by UN experts. The measure, issued via his social media platforms, lacks any authorization from the UN Security Council and directly undermines the sovereignty of a UN member state.
Analysis: The illegality of this unilateral declaration rests on several foundations. According to the 1944 Chicago Convention, each state has complete and exclusive sovereignty over the airspace above its territory. One country cannot decree the closure of another nation’s airspace.
Furthermore, UN experts have pointed out that U.S. military actions and threats in the region violate Venezuela’s sovereignty and the UN Charter. These measures, including a massive military deployment in the Caribbean, represent an “extremely dangerous escalation.”
Trump’s declaration is not only illegitimate, but it has also caused a crisis in air connectivity, impacting thousands of passengers and leading the Venezuelan government to revoke the licenses of airlines that suspended operations in response to the U.S. warning. The international community is watching this new aggression against the sovereignty of a sovereign state with great concern.
