The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Jay Clayton, has requested a brief postponement from Judge Alvin Hellerstein regarding the trial of Nicolás Maduro. The upcoming status conference, currently set for March 17, 2026, is proposed to be rescheduled to March 26, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.
Clayton made the request with the consent of Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores’ defense, also asking the judge to exclude the time between March 17 and March 26, 2026, for both defendants under the Speedy Trial Act, Article 18 U.S.C. § 3161(h)(7)(A).
Need for the Postponement
U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton explained to Judge Alvin Hellerstein, who presides over the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, that the postponement is necessary to avoid logistical and scheduling problems relating to the current date of March 17.

He noted that his office believes the interests of justice served by granting the requested time exclusion under the Speedy Trial Act outweigh the interests of the public and the defendants in a speedy trial. This allows the government to present evidence, the defense to review it, and for the defense to consider what pre-trial motions it plans to file. Both defendants’ attorneys have informed the prosecution that they consent to the aforementioned requests.
