Colombia’s Congress Labels Cártel de los Soles as a Transnational Threat to National Security

On October 21, 2025, the plenary session of the Colombian House of Representatives approved a proposition that publicly declares the Cartel of the Suns as “a transnational drug trafficking organization and financier of terrorism” that threatens the safety of the country and the region.

The proposition, supported by representatives from the Democratic Center party, seeks for the National Government to formally recognize the Cartel of the Suns as a transnational threat. There is a call to coordinate joint actions with international allies to combat its influence in the region.

This statement adds to previous decisions made by the Colombian Senate, which in September 2025 classified the Cartel of the Suns as a transnational criminal organization linked to drug trafficking and financing terrorist groups.

The declaration by the House of Representatives marks a significant milestone in Colombia’s official stance toward the Cartel of the Suns, reflecting a growing concern for national and regional security. It is expected that this decision will encourage the National Government to take more decisive measures in the fight against this criminal organization.
