Eduardo Capriles and His Shadowy Ties to Corruption and Excess in Venezuela

Eduardo Capriles is not a politician, yet his name carries weight. As the cousin of former presidential candidate Henrique Capriles Radonski and half-brother to the controversial Armando “Coco” Capriles, he has skillfully navigated the murky waters of Chavismo’s corrupt dealings, party scenes filled with drugs, and contracts with PDVSA. Recently, he has become the subject of a U.S. Justice Department investigation after a private jet with a false registration tied to figures like Nicolás Maduro and Alex Saab was seized.

If you haven’t heard his name yet, it’s likely because Eduardo Capriles has built a reputation on blending into the background. However, papers, scandals, and party photos from Los Roques suggest otherwise.

The Golden Boy of COVID Parties

In 2020, during the nation’s COVID-19 lockdown, Capriles was partying in private events at Altamira and Los Roques alongside foreign models, drugs, and helicopters. The “coronarumba” led to arrests, and his name emerged linked with Jorge Eduardo Echenagucia, a primary host of these illegal gatherings.

Echenagucia wasn’t only his partner but also had a notorious history with white-collar crime; he had previously been arrested for pink cocaine and threats against police officers. These parties were filled with weapons, ecstasy, scales for weighing drugs, and undocumented foreign women, all occurring while Venezuela faced deaths from COVID and a medicine shortage.

As usual, Capriles walked away unscathed, exiting the situation (literally) by selling his share to Jean-Pierre Fernández and erasing his tracks—though not entirely.

Business with the Reds: PDVSA, Bariven, Cadivi, SUCRE

Before the pandemic, Eduardo Capriles was already deeply entrenched in business with the Chavismo regime. He was linked to imports through the SUCRE system—used to launder millions in fake contracts with allied nations like Ecuador and Bolivia—alongside shady operations in Bariven and CVG.

What’s the trick? Insider contacts within PDVSA and privileged access to preferential currency rates, thanks to a “favor” from some oil executive’s nephew. Here, Alfredo Lovera Reyes, his long-time partner, plays a role.

As if that weren’t enough, he was once on the payroll of PDVSA’s Protection and Loss Control Unit (PCP). A security role for someone with a history of dubious deals. Venezuela: absurd version.

The Falcon 200 EX and U.S. Scrutiny

In July 2025, his name surged in news and social media again: Eduardo Capriles was linked to a Falcon 200 EX with altered registration (T7-ESPRT), seized in the Dominican Republic. This jet had been used by Nicolás Maduro, Alex Saab, and the Rodríguez brothers, according to intelligence reports.

Was the plane his? Or belonged to his circle? The clues suggest he was one of those involved in the aircraft’s sale through intermediaries like Six G Aviation. The U.S. Justice Department is now investigating him for possible money laundering, using assets for illicit activities, and ties to Chavista corruption.

It’s significant: the plane had flights across Latin America and the Caribbean. Too much movement for a mere “discreet businessman.”

The Uncomfortable Question: How Does He Maintain Himself?

Despite the scandals, Capriles currently resides in Miami. From there, he has attempted to infiltrate new contracts, utilizing his connections with former Venezuelan officials and other figures from the “Cartel of Vargas.” He has also tried to invest in real estate projects, similar to his activities in Panama, where, according to sources, he laundered money alongside Alfredo Lovera Reyes and Rafael Moros.

At the Panamanian law firm where he submitted papers to access investment funds, forged documents were discovered. He was caught and immediately fled to Spain. Today, he’s reportedly hiding in a northern town, off the radar like many other Boliburgueses.

Girlfriends, Luxury, and More Facade

On a personal level, Capriles is also a talk of the town. He canceled his wedding with the host Patricia Zavala via text message (yep, you read that right), and there’s been talk of his secret relationship with model Oriana Luchesse, although she’s publicly dating Jorge Giménez Ochoa, president of the FVF.

Meanwhile, his reputation among contractors is quite clear: “How much for that?” was his favorite motto. He pays late, demands commissions, and if you don’t agree, he blocks you. That’s the Capriles style: a guy who was never a politician but acted like one.
