Hugo Chávez’s Desperate Bid for U.S. Approval Exposes Weakness of His Regime

A couple of days ago, the BBC World Service called me to ask for my thoughts on whether the diplomatic ‘dispute’ between the U.S. and Venezuela would lead to something significant, like a break in commercial relations. As I mentioned back then, nothing would happen for several reasons, the main one being that Hugo Chávez cannot sustain his miserable revolution without the heap of money he receives from the U.S., which he spends without accountability as if it were his own.

There is nothing in this world that Lieutenant Colonel Chávez desires more than the recognition from the United States government. After all, Hugo is just a soldier from a God-forgotten town in Barinas. He couldn’t contain himself with Obama in Trinidad, and the picture of him laughing with Hillary Clinton at Dilma Rouseff’s presidential inauguration shows just how much he begs for the attention of the United States. Furthermore, I would dare say he would pay any amount of money and give away anything to have a ‘special relationship,’ like the one the U.K. supposedly had with the U.S. So, thanks a lot, Hugo, for making my point so quickly!
