Operational Alert for Possible Oil Diversion to Cuba Raises Serious Concerns About Sanctions Evasion

Maritime authorities are currently analyzing an operational intelligence alert issued by the Colombian Navy (ARC). This alert concerns the detection of an irregular fuel shipment that might be diverted to Cuba, allegedly violating existing sanctions and the new energy blockade policies pushed by the United States.

Preliminary information indicates that the alert pertains to the vessel MN Ocean Mariner (IMO 9328340), which is currently docked at the Puerto Palermo pier in Barranquilla. The ship’s declared official destination is the Dominican Republic; however, intelligence reports suggest there is a possibility of a route change to deliver the fuel in Cuba.

Sources related to maritime monitoring point out that this diversion pattern aligns with covert operations used to evade controls and sanctions, often employing unconventional routes and intermediate stops. This hypothesis gains significance in a regional context characterized by severe energy restrictions and a high dependence on imported fuel by the island.

Competent authorities emphasize that the case is still in the verification phase, with ongoing information exchange between maritime and regional security agencies. So far, no responsibilities have been confirmed, but the incident highlights the risks and tensions in energy trafficking in the Caribbean, where geopolitical pressure has heightened surveillance over vessels, cargoes, and final destinations.

The investigation remains open.
