The President of the United States, Donald Trump, recently had a phone call with Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, discussing the possibility of a face-to-face meeting, as confirmed by sources familiar with the incident to The New York Times.
The conversation, which also included Secretary of State Marco Rubio, took place amid increasing military and diplomatic pressure from Washington on Caracas’s government. Shortly after the call, the designation by the State Department classifying Maduro as a leader of a foreign terrorist organization took effect.
So far, there are no concrete plans for a meeting between the two leaders. The White House has declined to comment on the incident.
